The Summer 2025 issue of Project Upland Magazine sets the tone for hotter days, when dove season is the next hunting event on the horizon. The cover story explores southern dove culture and the family ties surrounding it. We then step into the “Outlier” of the .410 shotgun, tracing its origins in the United States, ballistic science, and popularity today. Public lands and their place in America come into focus with author Mark Parman. “The Mission” brings us a unique story of fatherhood and the uplands. On the conservation front, biologist Frank Loncarich shares his perspective on the dramatic decline of the Greater Prairie Chicken. From parking lot pigeon sales to the literary legacy of one of the greats, George Bird Evans, this issue will help you pass the time until hunting season.
We also feature our usual suspects, including a great Italian recipe from Rossano Russo, Jenny Nguyen-Wheatley’s Hawaiian twist on quail, and our always-needed comic relief from Naomi Coates.
We hope this issue finds you preparing for the coming seasons while still enjoying the fruits of summer with your dogs and family.

This fifth volume represents a closing chapter for Hunting Dog Confidential. For four years, we’ve worked to the fill the pages of Hunting Dog Confidential with stories of those who have filled their lives with animals in a meaningful way. We’ve shared glimpses into the partnership between human and dog in countless different locations and contexts. What always set this publication apart for me was that it was written by the very people who were doing amazing things with their dogs. It wasn’t written by staff writers or professional authors; high-resolution photos were frequently difficult to come by because these true dog folks rarely had access to a professional photographer who could document their stories as they unfolded. The stories within these pages have always been raw, authentic, and real.
We are sad to say that Hunting Dog Confidential in its current form will be retired with this book, but it’s far from the end of our mission to tell stories about the human-dog partnership that stretches back for millennia. We’re excited to pursue new projects that still align with the same goal: to celebrate and honor the stories of dogs that are woven throughout the tapestry of human culture and history.
This publication has never been seasonal or temporary and the hardcover format is a testament to our belief that these stories are timeless and will live on past this final volume.
200 Pages – Hardcover – First Edition (Limited to 1000 Copies)

The release of Volume Five, Issue Three signifies a pivotal moment in the journey of Project Upland Magazine. Looking back, it’s been five years since we introduced Issue Zero in September of 2018. The brand first launched in 2014, but little did we know then that our print publication would be our hallmark. This special issue is both a celebration and reflection, delving into the brand’s unique origins as narrated candidly by our founder, illustrating how we’ve often veered from the traditional path.
Diving into the pages, readers will discover the rich tapestry of the upland community, a diversity we’ve always been keen to spotlight. Our cover story offers a glimpse into our forthcoming film, “The River as Our Guide,” enriched with personal anecdotes from Callie Krewson. Merging art and conservation is the captivating “Woman of the Land, the Lek, and the Natural Lab.” As a nod to our reverence for history, we’ve included a selection from Edmund Davis’ 1908 classic, “Woodcock Shooting.” For our shared love of dogs, delve into articles discussing theories on wind and scent cones, a whimsical exploration of finding the perfect dog breed, a deep dive into the Brittany’s history, and so much more.
We’re immensely grateful to have you alongside us on this adventure. It’s the dedication of subscribers like you that propels our story forward.
