For All Canadian Orders Go To: Dog Willing Publications
This book travels well beyond the British Isles and provides a fascinating comparison of how setters and pointers are hunted and trialed in America, continental Europe, and beyond. Koshyk’s work transcends time as he explores the unique history of each of the five breeds, the current situation at home and abroad, and an honest but hopeful take on the future that lies ahead. Modern dog breeds are the product of people who remain tirelessly dedicated to them, and this book honors those who have worked to revive, restore, and improve each of these breeds for generations of hunters to come.

Excerpt from Chapter XIII, “On Telling Stories“:
“Our stories define us, telling the audience who we are, what we’ve experienced, and what we value. They shape our hunting culture, instructing us how we should think and act, shaping our tradition as we hand it down to the younger generation or to older hunters just setting forth…
Our stories have been told around campfires, along rivers and lakeshores, as well as on the tailgates of our trucks… We tell our stories in order for our upland culture to live—passing on its moral code, instructing other hunters, particularly the young and inexperienced—preserving memories, and sometimes for simply entertaining ourselves and other hunters.”

This fifth volume represents a closing chapter for Hunting Dog Confidential. For four years, we’ve worked to the fill the pages of Hunting Dog Confidential with stories of those who have filled their lives with animals in a meaningful way. We’ve shared glimpses into the partnership between human and dog in countless different locations and contexts. What always set this publication apart for me was that it was written by the very people who were doing amazing things with their dogs. It wasn’t written by staff writers or professional authors; high-resolution photos were frequently difficult to come by because these true dog folks rarely had access to a professional photographer who could document their stories as they unfolded. The stories within these pages have always been raw, authentic, and real.
We are sad to say that Hunting Dog Confidential in its current form will be retired with this book, but it’s far from the end of our mission to tell stories about the human-dog partnership that stretches back for millennia. We’re excited to pursue new projects that still align with the same goal: to celebrate and honor the stories of dogs that are woven throughout the tapestry of human culture and history.
This publication has never been seasonal or temporary and the hardcover format is a testament to our belief that these stories are timeless and will live on past this final volume.
