#42 | Mapping and Hunting Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock with Ann Jandernoa – Project Upland Podcast
Nick Larson is the host and creator of the Project…
On this episode of the Project Upland Podcast, I’m joined by Ann Jandernoa, owner of Northwind Enterprises as well as breeder and trainer of English setters. Ann joins the podcast to talk about the outlook for the 2018 ruffed grouse hunting season as well as her grouse and woodcock hunting habitat maps, including the latest iteration of the Scout-N-Hunt mobile and online mapping application.
During our conversation, Ann and I discuss the nesting and brooding season for ruffed grouse. She shares her personal ideas on what we might find in the woods this fall and suggests a range of options on what grouse hunters can do to improve their odds. We also talk about the history behind the grouse habitat maps Ann produces as well as her latest mobile and online mapping platform, Scout-N-Hunt.
About Scout-N-Hunt:
“Scout-N-Hunt is a mapping system that evaluates public hunting land through research and years of experience to determine which lands contain prime habitat for your best hunting options each year.
“It helps hunters understand which habitat is valuable for the best hunting experience because everything we hunt needs specific habitat.
“Hunters can research and locate public land/private land boundaries, key habitat locations and changing prime habitat locations before they step foot in a new area. You can also mark trails or save GPS location points for future hunts.”
About Ann Jandernoa:
“Ann’s vision from the beginning has been to grow Northwind Enterprises LLC based on her extensive knowledge of forestry, GIS, various mapping software programs, interpretation of aerial photography and satellite imagery, and experiences in being a hunter all her life, into a business that can provide the hunting enthusiast with the information, education and services that will make his/her hunting experiences as enjoyable and productive as possible.”

Nick Larson is the host and creator of the Project Upland Podcast. He and his family, which includes a pair of English setters, reside in Duluth, Minnesota. Naturally, his favorite pursuit is upland bird hunting. From the northern forests of the upper great lakes to the prairies of the west, he chases adventure across the uplands wherever his bird dogs and the people he meets inspire him to go.
I really enjoyed this episode full of great information from Ann Jandernoa a lot of which I hadn’t given much consideration. The characteristics of cuts she was detailing certainly makes a great deal of sense. After hearing what Ann was talking about I started to recall where I found birds last year and it all made a lot more sense and I hadn’t thought of it from that angle. I have purchased Ann’s Scout N Hunt mobile for this season and after spending time in WI scouting with it late summer, using it on my Iphone and Ipad, I see it as new tool that I know is going to change my productive time to put my pup on birds. After last year when it was so hot and birds few, each minute seemed to count against us. Huge thing with Scout N Hunt for me, no cell or internet connection required. And I never had one glitch.
Keep up the good work.
Many Thanks
