Janet Burroughs –
Really enjoyed the Steady Up article in the current issue of Project Upland. It nailed all the key points and it is great to have a summary in one article for reference. Thank you.
john –
no review, just a question, Is it possible to get one issue to see if I really want to subscribe? I subscribe to P D J and Gun Dog. your mag. looks interesting but 40 bucks for a retired NUT might be a bit to much. thanks

My favorite upland hunting publication. It is informative and entertaining. Often I will read the magazine cover to cover the day it arrives. If you enjoy the chase of the flush, this magazine is for you.
Scott Hudson (verified owner) –
Simply the best magazine I subscribe to. I literally read each issue cover to cover. The information contained in each issue is always relevant, useful and interesting. Wonderful articles pushing back into history that are very engaging. And, it is without question the most visually stunning publication out there. A great year-round read that keeps me feeling a strong connection to upland hunting. Worth every penny.
Jon Hartwick –
This magazine is fantastic. The photos and articles are perfect and informative, heartwarming, and fun. This is the only magazine that I read cover to cover and look forward to each magazine that comes out. It is great to throw in the truck and read during downtimes while hunting. It is great to look at during the off-season to get training tips and inspiration for the next hunt or adventure. Order this now, you won’t be disappointed.
Nate –
Project Upland and the Drake, head and shoulders above all other sporting publications.
Elise Letizia –
Project Upland Magazine’s first issue came out right around the time I got my hunting license. As an adult onset hunter, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. I began reading this magazine and fell in love with the idea of following a dog through the woods chasing after these magical birds which I had never even heard of before! I quickly signed up for a mentored grouse and woodcock hunting class and started doing research on various breeds of hunting dogs. It was through Project Upland and The Hunting Dog Confidential that I first heard of the Bracco Italiano, my breed of choice which I have come to adore! It has also introduced me to many vintage publications and upland hunting authors, for which I am grateful. Clearly, this publication has had a deep impact on me. The stories are thoughtful, reflective, passionate, and always leave me with that sense of longing for bird season to begin.
Mike (verified owner) –
Enjoyable with reduced commercials and relevant topics for bird-dog hunters. So far, so good.
Matt (verified owner) –
Really enjoy this magazine. Amazing pictures and thoughtful writing. Not just another magazine full of ads and products.
David Landon, Jr. (verified owner) –
Beautiful artwork, great recipes and stimulating articles that cover a range of topics from guns and trucks to ornithology and history of upland hunting. I look forward to reading each issue of Project Upland. It does contain a few small ads, but they are very appropriate for the subject matter (such as mapping apps, related books, etc.).

Rebecca A. Hofmann –
Having subscribed to Project Upland “from the beginning”, we are still just as excited to receive the current issue as we were the first. Full of relevant articles and stories sprinkled with a few recipes…I highly recommend giving your favorite upland hunter a subscription.
Ellen Zirkelbach –
Your magazine brings the hunting breeds into my life. The Sporting group which is my favorite dog group, comes alive on your magazine pages.
Though I am not a hunter myself I enjoy the stories in the the magazine which paints the unique relationship between dog and the hunter which is an unbreakable bond. I can only hope the dogs throughout my life felt about me the way Project Upland shows the hunter and his dog. Please continue to give us this beautiful relationship and information in print through your magazine and photos
Sean –
Project Upland has brought something new and exciting to the upland space, While also honoring and cherishing the history and traditions with in the upland hunting community. Great content, and outstanding photography. I look forward to each issue showing up in my mailbox.
Kurt –
Great articles on a broad range of topics with top notch illustrations.
Frans Diepstraten –
As reluctant as I am to add more stacks of magazines to my collection, I enjoy seeing Project Upland magazine in the mail: quality stories, great photography, recipes you really need to try, and the absence of product promotion disguised as an article. Every once in a while, you just need to step away from the screens, and feel and smell the paper.
Colin B –
It’s the only mag I keep a running subscription to. Great articles, good wild bird recipes, even some of the adverts are good. (I bought a nice used double from one of their ads)
dan.hueber –
Having been a subscriber for more that two years now, I can honestly say that Project Upland has become my favorite publication, and look forward to receiving every issue. The byline, “These Are Your Stories,” is not just a catchy slogan as each issue is loaded with stories from hunters across the U.S. participating in the sport that upland hunters and many dog owners truly love. Keep in mind as well, these stories are written by average, if you excuse the term, individuals, like you and me, who are passionate about the outdoors, the environment, dogs and the treasured guns we use for this sport. I would be remiss to exclude the various articles that share recipes, and the photography and artwork is always first-class. I would highly recommend subscribing to anyone who shares the love of the Upland community.

Beautiful photography and artwork, intriguing articles. Wish this was a monthly magazine!
Rob Somers –
Currently my only hunting periodical. What more do you need. Love the articles, provides all the knowledge I need for my next bird hunting adventure or recipe with my game.
Matt H (verified owner) –
Magazines are not only good reads, but the art is great and limited ads is nice. The smell of the magazines are even good! Highly suggest!
Scott Bonertz –
Project Upland is a fantastic resource for upland hunters! The magazine consistently delivers high-quality articles on hunting techniques, dog training, conservation efforts, and more. The stunning photography and engaging writing make each issue a joy to read. I look forward to every issue!
Ronald S. Jackson (verified owner) –
An amazing magazine with a little bit of everything for everyone who appreciates the upland life! The stories are heart felt and in depth. The recipes are really tasty and the tech plus destination hunts are very informative. I leave these magazines out on my coffee table, as they are a pleasure to read for me and any friends that stop by for a visit, not to mention that the magazines are well laid out and well made.
Print is not Dead!
Roy DeGrange –
Love everything about this magazine. Look forward to it every quarter.
Keep checking for my continental vol 1 books to come in.
Evan MacKinnon –
I have been a subscriber of Project Upland for several years now and always eagerly await it showing up in my mailbox.
Publications like this keep me centred and enthusiastic about the hobby and lifestyle. Project Upland is a bookshelf-worthy magazine that I can return to time and time again. I often find myself loaning out volumes to friends and family that are just getting into hunting dogs and upland pursuits – or those that just need a modern refresh. If you’re on the fence about subscribing – I can say this – it doubles as a recipe book and historical compendium. You will find value beyond the first read and a permanent place in your home to store the deep knowledge it provides!

You don’t know what you’re missing out on. I seem to hang onto old email notifications so I can go back and re-read all the content. Comprehensive in content. Every aspect of the “Upland Hunter” life is touched on. Great articles on topics you’re interested in or will be. Recipes for 5-star cuisine. POD casts you’re going to want to here. Art and much, much more. If you’re thinking about it, and my review could sway you(?) then do yourself a favor and be swayed. It’s worth every dime.

Two years ago I bought a Brittany Spaniel pup with the hope of eventually having a bird dog to hunt with. In my search for resources to help me along the way I came across Project Upland.
I live in Canada and we certainly don’t have a resource here to match it. Beyond dog training advice, I have enjoyed so much more. The photography alone is worth the subscription but dog training ideas, personal hunting stories, cuisine, the sense of shared love for our dogs and the uplands and more leave me waiting for the next issue. Thank you!
Andrew Roberto (verified owner) –
Great format and content. I appreciate the variety of articles with game recipies being a nice bonus. Highly recommend if you are a dedicated upland hunter. No fluff; just great overall content, thoughtful articles and photography.
Philip Baese –
In a world of disposable media, this magazine is a refreshing outlier. The quality of the articles, photographs, and illustrations is remarkable and keeps me reading consistently once I pick it up and I go back and read again. The focus on bird hunting and dogs is why I enjoy it. It’s a wonderful periodical that I look forward to receiving. Good work and thanks for putting out such a high quality product.
Anthony Williams (verified owner) –
Excellent Magazine, love the content!
Benjamin Sisson (verified owner) –
A beautifully crafted journal for all things upland, bird dogs, and shotguns. It’s the down to earth (also prettier and better written) version of Covey Rise.
Dan Kuzio (verified owner) –
Got my first issue. Was a great read and didn’t feel like I was reading a magazine that was made for millionaires.
Sean Sullivan (verified owner) –
I really enjoy getting the magazine. As a long time upland hunter and devout GWP owner, the trip articles, the technique articles and the cooking articles are all wonderfully written and enjoyable to read. Beautiful pictures top out an amazing magazine. Thank you.

I’m a new subscriber to Project Upland magazine, but I’m already “sold” on it. I’ve subscribed (and still do) to a number of hunting dog journals, but I’ve never encountered one as well done as PU. I’m a 78-year-old veterinarian, have owned bird dogs for nearly 60 years, and enjoyed a variety of breeds. This journal is the most professional, evidence-based sporting magazine that I’ve ever read. In addition to the magazine, I really appreciate the email updates, the blog links, and the quick connect to Audible books. I’ve learned a wealth of information from the audio recordings while I drive around town or to one of my favorite hunting spots. My congratulations to the dedicated staff who have a vision that is, in my experience, unique. When they say that each issue of Project Upland magazine is coffee table-worthy, they are spot-on! Thanks for bringing this amazing magazine to the fans of hunting dogs and bird hunting.

I’m an adult onset hunter, and I was looking for a magazine that could help me learn more about all types of bird hunting. I’ll mostly be doing waterfowl, but sometimes upland and turkey hunting too. I purchased a subscription to Project Upland and immediately started reading its high quality articles online about how to duck hunt, since ’tis the season! Hunting tidal marshes, and small groups of decoys, were both super relevant to me and helped me think through things I wouldn’t have thought of like whether I should try to stomp through deep muck in a marsh while water is flowing during a tide change, or whether I could lose my waders in such a situation. LOL kind of niche but useful! When I got the actual magazine in the mail – WOW. It is absolutely beautifully produced. You don’t go through 90 pages of ads to get to 10 pages of topical content. The writers are knowledgeable and eloquent and share their passion. The illustrations are worthy of wall display. Even the paper is a nice stock to hold. If that weren’t enough, I’m a woman, and I’m used to being ignored as a hunter. SO MANY hunting resources refer to their readers or viewers or friends or other hunters as “guys”. I ignore it but I definitely get tired of it. It was refreshing to see women included in this magazine, and no language that assumed that all hunters are dudes. LOL we’re not all dudes! Anyways, I really love this magazine and can’t wait to get the next one.

Got my very first issue last week, TOP SHELF in all regards. Two regrets, I haven’t been with you from day one, helping to support such a quality publication from the outset, and that I never learned to write!! Love the content and the lack of advertisements that have ruined so many great publications in the hook and bullet market. Here’s to many years of success for your magazine !
Cheers, Steve Bell, Yaak, MT

I recently received my first issue and read it from front to back without putting it down. It is so good. I can’t wait for the next issue.
don teska –
Thanks for a great magazine! Hunting stories by other hunters are great, love the articles on birds and their habits and habitat, cooking them, and about the dogs! You read my mind when you had an article on the different testing requirements of the various dog registries! Keep up the great work!!
Zach –
Good stories, excellent photos! I wish they had more content relevant to training bird dogs for western hunters and bird hunting in the west in general. I love reading about classic grouse hunts and all the different bird dogs and guns and everything in between, but I feel true representation of western hunters is lacking. Great magazine, overall.

When I got my first Wirehaired Pointing Griffon now 11 years ago, I was set to add upland hunting to my waterfowl excursions. Little did I know how much that dog would change hunting for me and to provide an avenue for my wife to get involved. As we learned more in the field I looked for other sources of books, magazines and on line articles. Project Upland stands out as a primary source of good information, well written articles and a lot of good hunting advice and recipes. It is a staple to read each issue with my now four WPGs by my side. I even participated in the CZ Project Upland gun design years ago and I own a match set of 12, 20 and 28 gauge SxS. It has been a lot of enjoyment to read each copy as they arrive.
Geoffrey Henggeler –
I happened upon Project Upland by chance. We were getting our first bird dog in early 2021. The litter was born before Christmas, and our family was eagerly waiting for the new year to bring our new puppy home. My wife picked up a print copy of Project Upland as a Christmas present for me. Reading that first issue, I immediately knew that our choice to get a bird dog, and my choice to resume the upland hunting that I had fallen away from after my youth, were exactly the right choices. Project Upland opened my eyes and mind to the wide world of upland hunting. Prior to becoming a subscriber my knowledge of the upland world was limited to Bobwhites and Pheasant of the Midwest, and only a few of the most common bird dog breeds out there. Now, several years later, my upland hunting horizon has grown incredibly. I’ve been inspired to hunt several different new upland species (woodcock, sharp-tail, and prairie chickens) and the list of bird dog breeds I’m actively considering includes many additional breeds. All of this was largely inspired by the wonderful content in Project Upland. The magazine, videos, podcasts and more have been so worth it. I value the knowledge and inspiration I receive from each issue. So worth it.

I’ve enjoyed this publication prior to owning a dog (lots of miles beating the brush with minimal success) and I have a feeling I’m going to find it even more useful in the years to come as I am in the process of adopting my first bird dog! Would love to see some French Brittany content in the future. Great writing and photography with minimal advertisements. Top notch quality and always excited to find one in the mailbox.

Refreshing meld of new and classic bird hunting material. For the classic, I just finished reading the excerpt from Frank Winch’s classic book “The American Hunter” in the winter 2024 issue of Project Upland. I so enjoy the simple approach to bird shooting fundamentals, by bird type (grouse, pheasant, etc.), and his overview of the basic bird dog types and handling techniques. Frank’s approach was straight forward, and his enthusiasm makes one want to drop everything and go chase some birds over their four legged, best friend. Now, I am on a quest to locate an old copy of Frank’s book to add to my library.
The winter issue also includes an interesting article on dog breed purity. It is a shame many breeders put pride, and probably the dollar, ahead of maintaining the practical, designed roots of the different breeds. I couldn’t agree more with the author’s characterization of the fancy, Westminster dog shows. “In short, nothing is done that could conceivably demonstrate real improvement in the breed.”
I love hunting over dogs. Project Upland encourages me to keep working with my pups and to plan trips to chase birds! Thank you for a great publication!
Chris Conto –
Love the Magazine! Great details about the dogs we love plus a great way to learn about other breeds.
Michael Guice –
I subscribed to this magazine because I wanted to learn more about my German Wirehaired Pointer that I had purchased and was training for wilderness search rescue.
What I received was a wonderful magazine with great information and articles and absolutely stunning photography.
It’s worth the price just for the pictures.
I highly recommend
Heather Dunbar –
As a life-long hunter who’s lived in the American Southwest for the past nineteen years after 50 years in Vermont, Project Upland Magazine brings me home to the woods of New England. The photographs, well-written articles, and hunting values throughout the magazine bring back the sounds and sights of the many miles traipsed through the northern woods behind my dogs. Thank you for such a quality magazine!
Rob Sloane –
I have been a long time subscriber and I eagerly await for the next issue, after reading each issue cover to cover multiple times. Highly recommend this publication for everything upland.
Ty –
I received a subscription as a Christmas gift recommendation that my mother received from multiple upland enthusiast within our Ruffed Grouse Society Chapter. To say this magazine is insightful and entertaining is selling it short. The images and articles are well laid out and constructed. It touches on multiple categories and facets of our sport and I would say has something for everyone. I will continue to keep this subscription as a yearly stocking stuffer gift for sure haha
Brandon Harmon –
Project Upland is a great representation of the upland hunting lifestyle. Great stories, tactical information, conservation, and celebrating the history of our great sport. I look forward to each issue!
Carlos Kerley Jr –
Have been a subscriber for a few years now, it’s just a quality magazine. It reminds me of what Gun Dog and Wildfowl were in the 1990’s, not full of hype and ads like today. I pass along my copies to folks I know, and I’m even picky about who gets them. As of right now it’s the only subscription I do outside of DU and similar.
