#84 | Converting Hunters to Conservationist with the Ruffed Grouse Society – Project Upland Podcast

Dive into the world of forest conservation, ruffed grouse, and woodcock with the Ruffed Grouse Society.

“One of the goals of becoming a hunter is that you transition into becoming a conservationist… and you begin to learn a little bit more about these complex relationships [between wildlife and habitat]”

Jon Steigerwaldt – Ruffed Grouse Society

On a cold November day, the Project Upland Podcast traveled to Northern Wisconsin to spend some time afield with a pair of wildlife and habitat professionals from the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society. Joined by Jon Steigerwaldt and Jared Elm, we spent a day hunting ruffed grouse together, all the while talking habitat and conservation. At the end of the day we gathered at my family’s cabin to discuss the day’s events as well as dive deeper into the world of RGS | AWS and the work that they perform in support of wildlife and healthy forests.

Across the range of the ruffed grouse and American woodcock, RGS | AWS is working hard to unite conservationists in order to improve wildlife habitat and forest health. These two native bird species depend on healthy, diverse forests and where those are absent, so to are these birds. As a bellwether species the ruffed grouse is a fantastic indicator of forest health which lies at the core of the RGS | AWS mission.

Tune in to this episode of the Project Upland Podcast as Jon, Jared and myself discuss the hunting and conservation of ruffed grouse and woodcock.
