You shouldn’t have to be a great dog trainer to have a good bird dog, but you do need to have access to birds, wild birds in particular.”

Jerry Kolter | Northwoods Bird Dogs

A week ahead of the day I would take home my second bird dog puppy from Northwoods Bird Dogs in Sandstone, Minnesota, I stopped in to train dogs and chat with owner and operator, Jerry Kolter. A previous guest of the Project Upland Podcast (episode #29), Jerry shares with us, his decades of experience handling wild bird dogs and hunting upland birds.

We focus a good deal of our conversation on puppy development, from the time the pups are born to the time they are taken home at roughly 8 weeks and beyond. We also delve into pup’s introduction to birds and guns, its first hunting season and more.

Tune in to this episode of the Project Upland Podcast for an in depth conversation on what it takes to get a wild bird dogs started in the right direction.

About | Northwoods Bird Dogs
“Northwoods Bird Dogs was founded in 2002 by husband-and-wife team Jerry Kolter and Betsy Danielson. They are adjacent to 2,000 acres of private land and are surrounded by thousands of acres of public land. A healthy mix of habitat holds populations of ruffed grouse and migrating woodcock in the woods while the fields are home to coveys of sharp-tailed grouse. The kennel itself has only 20 runs and Jerry and Betsy like it that way. They purposely limit both the litters they breed and the number of dogs they train. Individual care and attention are primary concerns for them. Together Jerry and Betsy move south during the winter. They bring their own dogs and a select group of client dogs for specific training on quail.”
