Because They’re Wild: A New York Ruffed Grouse Hunting Story

An inside look at a conservation group: the Ruffed Grouse Society.

Because They’re Wild is part of the Project Upland Film series. We follow the northeast regional director of the Ruffed Grouse Society, Tripp Way, into the grouse woods. Tripp reflects on his enjoyment of the woods, his passion for the Ruffed Grouse and the precious time spent afield with friends. As a dedicated conservationist and experienced upland hunter, Tripp believes “it is our responsibility to get these folks in the woods.”

“I find this to be one of the absolute pleasures of my life right now. And every one of these is a treasure. Truly.” – Perry Masotti

Tripp ventures across upstate New York hunting wild birds. Even in a world of instant gratification, the tradition of hunting wild birds cannot be replaced by hunting preserves.

“For Tripp Way, Northeast Regional Director of The Ruffed Grouse Society, ruffed grouse and his pursuit of the bird represents many of the best things about hunting. Way talks about some of those things in ‘Because They’re Wild’, a rich and heartfelt film by A.J. DeRosa.” – Wide Open Spaces

Project Upland is a bird hunting videos initiative that promotes the future of upland bird hunting through bird hunting videos, online blogs, and other media outlets. Geared to capture the essence of the grouse woods, Project Uplands inspires a future generation of upland bird hunters in all sporting traditions. From pheasants to ruffed grouse—whatever your game—this epic video series of bird hunting tells your stories.
